Go Kams! -- By the way, folks, feel free to contact Joe Biden and Judge Juan Merchan, asking them not to pardon Trump, or refuse to give him jail time, or fail to prosecute him to the utmost reasonable extent. https://www.whitehouse.gov/contact/share/ ; jmerchan@nycourts.gov . (Addresses to the best of my knowledge; feel free to research further, send paper mail, etc.).Thanks!

I have been wondering the same thing. Did he receive threats? Is that why he allowed Trump to run for president? What sane reason could be behind that decision? I saw that the female employee at Arlington, that was assaulted by a member of Trump's mobmen, did not file charges being afraid of retaliation. After hearing she was female, now I understand the assault and Trump's derogatory comments about this employee being weak minded and not right in the head. Katie Johnson, who was the 13 year old child raped by Trump did try to file charges but withdrew them after receiving death threats. What has our country become?

Jean, I think you must be one of the few brave people that stood up to him. Thank you.

Sadly - the dems will do nothing. If there is one thing I have witnessed in all my years as a Democrat - we talk a lot but lack the spine. Case in point - the very decent and competent Merrick Garland, who sat on his hands for a full two years before even deciding to charge Trump, all the while saying "no one is above the law." All talk - action too little, far too late. And proving that yes, Trump is above the law and will continue to be.

We are not a nation of good people. Trump held up a mirror and saw himself and vice versa. This is the ultimate tragedy.

We have gone back. Wake up.

Expand full comment

Actually, I’m more awake than I’ve ever been.

While I awoke the day after the election to the news that it’s still a man’s world (and a shitty one at that), that the majority of voters cannot fathom a female president, that misogyny continues to run wild, that revenge and not progress is the name of the game, that there are policies in place that will further limit women’s already limited and unequal rights, that the new administration will attempt to dictate who we love or how live our lives, I am more determined to NEVER EVER go back. I can’t change that we lost. But I certainly can refuse to adhere to a defeatist attitude that “waking up” means giving in. Fuck no.

Expand full comment

Thanks for this, I totally agree. While I’m feeling overwhelming anger, anxiety, and sadness, I’m also feeling wide awake and as determined as you to NEVER EVER go back. I like the way that you framed it “waking up” doesn’t mean giving up, or giving in. Fuck no and FUCK THEM.

Garland has been such a monumental disappointment. He has helped this country slow-walk into autocracy by not dealing with Trump. Trump is a traitor plain and simple. I want Biden to add two justices to the Supreme Court before he leaves. It would be great if Kamala Harris was one of those. She would be terrific if she would want the job. I suspect we'll be voting again in four years. But I don't think we're going to run another woman that soon after having two lose eight years apart. (Clinton would have won had Jill Stein not taken just enough votes to give Clinton the necessary electoral votes.)

Hillary lost because Comey interjected a needless comment.

About the vote.....that's not a sure thing, anymore.

Expand full comment

No. Do you want to lose again?? Get real.

Obviously this country has rejected two competent superior women to the cretin.

They wanted to run against her because the Republicans know Americans are too racist and sexist.

Expand full comment

I agree. I think it's going to be at least 20 years before the Dems run another woman (assuming we keep our Democracy). It really scuks that so many people in our country are so backward. As I said somewhere within the last couple of weeks, Joe Biden is the best pres of my lifetime, which began the first summer of the Eisenhower Administration, but that I wouldn't be surprised if Harris surpasses Biden. Now... I'll likely never get to find out.

It must be said that a major part of what made HRC lose was Jill Stein, who received the number of votes in Michigan, Wisconsin, and I forget which other state, that would have put Hillary over the top. Stein, who is a neighbor, is a person whose ego is outsized compared to her ability to think clearly, and her sons were quite pissed off at her for running this go-round. But I haven't heard anything that suggests that her absence from this race would have put Kamala Harris over the top.

Jill Stein DID, however, help influence a lot of furious Muslim people in MI to vote against their own self-interest. It’s wild to think that Trump’s actual MUSLIM BAN was just 8 years ago (and it swept plenty of other Arab people along— because what’s the diff to Trump & his cronies?)— yet so many Muslim/Arab US citizens felt fine with punishing the Democrats for Biden’s (wrong-headed, IMO) actions on Gaza, even though Trumpism is likely to lead to an even worse outcome for Palestinians.

I hate what the Israeli government is doing to Gaza. Netanyahu and his fellow super-hawks have been making great progress on their lifelong dream: exterminating the Palestinian people. I regret that Kamala didn’t speak out about the Biden admin’s role in that. I have a feeling that she would’ve made very different moves immediately in January.

Meanwhile, we’ll never know now…and Jill Stein is smugly noting that she sure taught those Dems a lesson.

Expand full comment

thanks for this, Maria. You're helping me feel a little better. And, yeah, Netanyahu is Israel's Trump.

As for Stein, she's indirectly responsible for all the Dobbs-related morbidity and mortality among girls and women, but I doubt that's ever occurred to her.

And I agree with... well, everything you say.

If we had ranked choice voting, it would be reasonable for people to run as third party candidates. If not, if they do anything, they will deprive some often worthy person of being elected, as Jill Stein did to HRC in 2016.

The wall in Germany fell. We simply need to go about our lives and speak with the working class voters who stuck by Trump. What we need are people with expertise in agriculture, manufacturing, crafting, unions to quietly, socially, caringly meet with Trump's working class voters to show them he will never take their interests into account. And we need that expertise to be in true conversation, give and take, finding out what they do, what they need and who is likely to provide it. It won't be centrist Democrats as Biden showed progressive policies when he ran in 2020. He got their votes. We can set up an online community listing working class careers, offering our services, working with them on an ongoing basis until the next time there's a vote. And liase with progressive Democrats in localities to bring them along. We must save ourselves. This is the way I think we can do it.
