Apparently the UK respects their own laws. The United States does not. Sad.

Well and perfectly said, Annabel!

Hardly! The monarchs shelled out £12 million, including a £2 million contribution to Virginia Giuffre’s sex trafficking charity. It’s confirmed that both Queen Elizabeth & the Prince of Wales agreed to help financially cover the settlement in order to bring closure to the case and prevent further tarnishing of the royal family’s image. [during the Jubilee Celebration]

Sara Anne Maguire's avatar

This.

Charles and William are probably sweating that this could be the end of the monarchy (and quite frankly, that is overdue IMHO.)

Made You Look's avatar

Pressure will be on Charles to step down let William modernize the monarchy

I gotta say, I really liked Queen Elizabeth. She was an amazing person. She served as a mechanic during WWII, later, as Queen, behind the wheel she scared the bejesus out of some royal from one of those countries where women aren't allowed to drive, doing a good job of making her point, and she had a wicked sense of humor (in the Bostonian sense of "wicked").

William!!! he had enough! (finally!!!!)

For the sake of accuracy and clarity:

In February 2022, Prince Andrew entered into a confidential civil settlement with Virginia Giuffre. The settlement expressly did not constitute an admission of liability. The financial terms were not publicly disclosed by the parties.

Multiple “media outlets” reported that the total amount may have been in the region of approximately £12 million. However, that figure has never been formally confirmed in an “official disclosure.”

The settlement statement referenced a “substantial donation” to a charity associated with Ms. Giuffre’s advocacy work. Specific sums, including reports of a £2 million contribution, derive from —media reporting rather than itemized, publicly verified documentation.

With respect to Queen Elizabeth II and the then–Prince of Wales, press accounts have suggested that members of the royal family may have assisted in facilitating or supporting the settlement. However, absent an official statement, audited financial record, or formal accounting identifying the source and allocation of funds, any assertion that the Queen personally paid a specific amount remains unverified and should be characterized as reported allegation rather than established fact.

Accordingly, it is accurate to state that a settlement occurred and that charitable support was referenced. It is not accurate to present specific figures or funding sources as confirmed without formal documentation.

Well, that didn't work, did it? On to covering Andrew's lily-white ass now.

I think the only chance they have to preserve the monarchy is to follow the law. Otherwise, they're just a bunch of shills like the Trump family.

I am giddy over the idea that a man with such connections and wealth might face actual consequences. It gives me hope.

I agree with Borowitz that Andrew should have moved to D.C. because it’s a sanctuary city for pedophiles.

Susan Shaer's avatar

No kings. No princes.

Brian Helfrich's avatar

I do find it's disgusting that the Andrew, formerly known as prince, was arrested for the act of sharing confidential financial information, instead of raping young girls.

I guess we'll take what us peons can get.

Coastal Fogg's avatar

At least these traitorous financial schemes open the door for authorities-hopefully the Epstein sex trafficking evidence will spill out from those investigations.

Laura Dawson's avatar

It's the Al Capone approach. Get him for what he can be gotten for, and pile other charges on him later.

Michele Redman's avatar

and yet the visual continues to be Andrew hovering over a young girl's body

Susanne Smith's avatar

It's the Al Capone effect!

Hooray! Thanks to the British group who filed a complaint against that monster Andrew. (Source The Guardian)Thanks to the British police who are taking this seriously. Time to abolish the monarchy in its entirety. I will end by saying Rest In Peace, Virginia. 🙏

Octavia Redwood's avatar

Virginia is more significant to me than the monarchy. She is any of us or a young woman we've known-half the planet. For so long, they and many others discredited her, sneered at her, called her a liar, said the photo was fake, etc. It took not just her book, but taking her own life at such a still young age for some to see reality. Any other man would have had charges against him for his actions at the time. When you feel sorry for Andrew, think of Virginia.

Brian Elvin's avatar

Remember it was income taxes that brought down Al Capone

Trish Triumpho's avatar

After listening to her book [on Libro.FM to support indie bookstores] I am over the moon that randy-andy has been arrested. I could have been Virginia as a teen had things gone even slightly different for me. I know so many survivors and even if it's not for child sexual assault - we know he is scared and that's good.

Paulina's avatar

And women if they took any part in it!

Ramona Boston's avatar

No, actually they didn’t. No other man has had charges

against them. Only one woman.

Octavia Redwood's avatar

so then his behavior should be ignored? and the decades of the UK press sneering at her and fluffing up Andrew?

Ramona Boston's avatar

NO! Not at all. I was responding to the incorrect statement, "Any other man would have had charges against him for his actions at the time." No other man has had charges. They ALL should have had charges!

Octavia Redwood's avatar

appreciate the clarification-I concede I am triggered by this whole story.

Ramona Boston's avatar

We are all in this together.

They won't abolish it bec it's a tourist attraction that brings in over $2B yrly.

I loved Borowitz today…that Trump decided he didn’t want to be royalty.

Octavia Redwood's avatar

Andy definitely adds to my life. Love that twisted humor.

Valerie Acton's avatar

My take:

Fina-fucking-ly!

I hope that "man" exposes Trump in his bid for leniency (if there is such a thing in British law).

So interesting to watch the U.S. waiting for Europe to save it, since the U.S. loves to talk about saving Europe in two world wars.

My mom is a retired forensic scientist.

When news of stem cell research being denied by U.S. "pro-life" religious nutbags and their elected officials was reported on years (decades?) ago, I shared with her my dismay.

She said, "The U.S. isn't the only country with scientists."

The U.S. is also not the only country with a legal system.

Europe will do the right thing by the survivors, and that is proven (proved?) by today's arrestof the Andrew formerly known as "Prince."

Valerie Acton's avatar

Quick follow-up:

DNA was accidentally discovered in a UK lab (read Joseph Wambaugh's The Blooding to learn more).

So many advances in science are accidental and, when in the hands of ethical scientists, beneficial to us all.

Laura Dawson's avatar

Remember Rosalind Franklin. Her research was basically yanked by Watson & Crick, and she never got the credit. James Watson was a notorious racist and misogynist.

Valerie Acton's avatar

Did not know this, but unsurprised.

Thank you for my next research project!

Susanne Smith's avatar

I knew that! Don't know if I read Wambaugh (read some of his other books) but I remember where I was when I learned it (likely late '80s) - I had a policeman approach me about making some of his pre-DNA stories from back in the day into a book - spent at lot of time with him before I realized crooks were just stupid pre-DNA so I couldn't create interesting cat-and-mouse stories where the bad guys at least had a personality!

How ironic it is that the country the U. S. broke away from, England, because of its mad king and undemocratic monarchy, has now surpassed our country in showing the world that no one, not even a member of their royalty, is above the law or immune to moral rejection.

It's time for this country to revive our pursuit of equal treatment of every person under our laws as the 250th anniversary of our democracy approaches.

Receiving payment for tours of his family's private homes is the least of his crime - I hope Sarah is next for a cell in the pokey.

On a side note, he and I are the same age and he hasn't aged well despite he's soft living ~ a rotten heart show up eventually on a person's countenance.

Laura Dawson's avatar

Sarah has run away to Dubai. I don't know that she'll ever face justice.

Kathleen DiGregorio's avatar

The UK, like the US, have trained forces who can escort her back to face the music. Dubai has no reason to her sanctuary.

Laura Dawson's avatar

Ooooh, they can extradite to Scotland, so there's a possibility.

Okay, on this one, I have takes upon takes. I've been a royals follower since I was a kid - even pre-Diana. Had a crush on Edward, etc. etc. Always got the ick from Andrew, from the jump. That said...this MADE MY DAY. The fact that the media's been so busy excoriating Harry and Meghan for leaving that dysfunctional excuse of a "family" while ignoring Andrew has curdled any affection that may have still remained in me (and of course the more one finds out about this "family" and their utter corruption, which includes Elizabeth herself - no saint, she - the more one sees monarchy as the absolute farce it is.)

I hope they all go down and their wealth is redistributed. That won't happen, but PLEASE let Andrew write a scathing memoir in revenge.

Skitealwedrop's avatar

He needs to spend some time in prison so he can think about what a horrible human he’s been.

Laura Dawson's avatar

I hope he rots there, while blabbing everything he knows for the public record.
